Geographie

Geography

The subject of geography, while to many is literally the description of the earth, consists today of so much more than this. Everything we interact with in our daily lives is geography, be it our social lives, or the natural world that surrounds us. Geography is much more than just learning about mountain, rivers, writing on maps, or memorizing capital cities.

Natural wonders and pheneomena can be seen everywhere which are in constant change and this is the world in which we as humans have to change and adapt. The main focus of the subject of geography is the idea of “space”, both natural and created by humans. The key focus oft he subject is how we humans interact and treat this natural, social and technical environment. Geography is the subject that helps young people to understand the world us and explains how we use or abuse our Planet and the consequenes that come from this. In addition to this the offer of studying the subject Bilingually (from the 7th class) through English offers our students the opportunity to not only study the subject of geography, but to also develop their language skills and learn a second language in depth and to a high level. This possibility is unique to our school in all of the Harburg area.

Through the study of a dynamic subject like geography, learners get an insight into the key problems of our time: poverty, environmental problems, energy sources, water, agricultural development, sustainable consumption, tourism, human rights, migration, intercultural education, cultural diversity, peace and security, climate change, biological diversity, Civil protection or urbanization…. It becomes clear at first glance: These topics are the great challenges of our present and future. We examine these topics through innovative group and individual work, in the form of projects and assignments. Our international team of teachers provide our students with a bigger world view in which to look at these important issues.

The foundations for this level of education are laid through extensive teamwork and planning within the geography department. Students are taught how to understand and assess these pheneomena and through this widen their world view from Marmstorf, to a national and international perspective. Independent of „fake news“. Ultimately, the subject, in line with the concept of sustainability, creates an awareness of our responsibility for our cultural, economic, political and ecological environment and shows us how to take action as actors in the increasingly complex world that we live in.
